How to leverage the EHR for effective clinical workflows

Preview our eBook that explains four strategies to leverage your EHR for effective clinical workflows.
Clinical Workflows

Without effective workflows, doing any job can be a challenge, and clinical work is no exception. Thankfully, automation can simplify certain tasks and accelerate workflows – but it also has the potential to create challenges, and at times, frustration.

When it comes to electronic health record (EHR) workflows, there are a number of workflow automation capabilities within EHR systems that not only promote the efficient completion of tasks, but also can transform how work is done and, ultimately, support better outcomes.

Our eBook, Leveraging the EHR for effective clinical workflows, explores four strategies that can help clinicians improve workflows by leveraging tools they already have within their EHR systems, including:

  • Personalized documentation templates
  • Task delegation
  • Follow-up reminders
  • Customization of clinical decision support (CDS) features

Leveraging the EHR for effective clinical workflows:
Four strategies to try today

Task delegation

In most practices, not every issue needs to be handled by a provider. Depending on the qualifications of other members on a clinical team, it may be appropriate for non-providers, or even non-clinician staff, to handle certain tasks. For instance, many practices configure their EHRs to automatically route prescription renewal requests to nursing staff, who are empowered to approve renewals on the provider’s behalf based on standardized protocols for common medications. In such arrangements, the provider only gets the requests that fall outside the carefully designed criteria for delegated renewal.
